Default Migrate and decommission sbs server 2003 to 2008 std (without Exchange)

Hi,

After much searching and conflicting answers, especially about the need for the transition pack, I am going to make this post. I have seen several similar posts without any sort of definitive answer.

We currently have an SBS 2003 domain controller with no Exchange or SQLserver.

For redundancy purposes and for the 75 user/device limit, my aim is to have 2 Windows Server 2008 domain controllers and completely decommision the SBS 2003 server.

From the various forums and documents I have seen, the main steps appear to be the following :

1) Install a Windows Server 2008 and join the domain as member server
2) Install DNS on the 2008 server
3) Promote Windows Server 2008 to DC
4) Make Windows Server 2008 a global catlog server
5) Transfer FSMO roles to Windows Server 2008
6) Migrate DHCP scopes to Windows Server 2008
7) Install and replicate WINS
Print queues ?
9) Remove global catalog from SBS 2003
10) Demote SBS 2003 to member server
11) Decommission SBS 2003

I would very much appreciate any comments on this.

Kind Regards

Jeremy

Check first that your SBS2003 box meets the following:
  • O/S: SBS2003 with SP1 or SBS2003 R2.
  • Installed updates: "Windows Vista and Outlook 2007 compatibility update" (KB 926505). See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926505 (may not be needed in your setup, w/o Exchange)

You seem to be along right track there, see also some comments I made in this thread: http://forums.petri.com/showthread.p...925#post145925 so step 1 should be using adprep on the SBS box.

See also http://technet2.microsoft.com/Window....mspx?mfr=true paying particular note to the section "To join a computer running Windows Server 2008 as an additional domain controller to the Windows SBS network"

I think that if you sieze the FSMO roles you can just unplug the old SBS box and put it in the skip
