Default Migrating from 2003 STD to 2007/2010 STD (mbx size questions).

Hi,

We're currently looking at doing the transition of our Exchange 2003 STD to Exchange 2007 STD or 2010 STD. Basically, we have around 125 mailboxes to transfer.

The problem we have right now with our mailbox store on 2003 STD is that the mailbox store has grown to ~105GB. The logical limit is 72GB and we've been trying to implement rules for mailbox size/retentions and deleting mailboxes but administration is not helping at all on this matter and it got out of hand. So basically, administration rather pay for the transition and get rid of the 72GB limit (which i think is perfectly fine for 125 disciplined users).

My question is quite simple, upon doing the transition from Exchange 2003 STD to Exchange 2007 STD (or 2010 STD), should i be worried about the fact that we're over the logical limit of Exchange 2003 STD during the transition or it won't cause any problem ?

Best regards,

trep

Short answer is no.
The initial limit on standard edition is 250gb I believe, but that is just a soft limit. The hard limit is something like 8TB so is effectively unlimited.

125 users is going to be a tight squeeze on 75gb in this day and age. Storage is cheap and if you need to retain data then it better to store it in Exchange.
If you allow users to create PST files then you have issues with backup and bloat of the files.

Simon.

Thanks for the answer !

I was already thinking of overriding the soft cap of 2007 or 2010. Users are allowed to use PST but yea, they don't want to hehe
