Question Migration: Group Policy management 2008 Error " The Network name can not be found"

Dear Team,
Please help me...

3 days before, I installed server 2008 std in my new Dell server & after that I transfered all roles from My 2003 DC to this new 2008 Server through ntdsutil.exe by command prompt, after finished display message "Suceesfull"
during Tranfering roles I select domain functional level "2000 Native "
* forest functional Level is 2000.

Now today, when I open GPMC in my new 2008 server & click Starter GPO, then display the error " The network name can not found", I am unable to create a new policy for a Domain OUs.

And also when i check in 2008 server the report in GPMC, in that show SYSVol not available.
But I am able to see all users, groups & OUs.

Please suggest me what is the problem & how can i solve it...
this is very urgent.

Can you provide some more info on your infrastructure ?

how many DCs, DNS servers and how DNS is configured?

Also there are a number of ports which needs to be opened for active directory to function. Check out the ports in windows 2008 firewall rules if they are all open. Some of them are TCP 135,139,389,3269,3268

UDP - 137,138 etc.

Post Re: Migration: Group Policy management 2008 Error " The Network name can not be found

Dear jainal,

My company is very small, now we have 2 DCs, Old 2003 DC & new 2008 PDC.
DNS Server is already present in old 2003 ADC.
I was just all 5 fsmo roles transfer to 2008 DC from 2003 old DC, Roles successfull transfer. all groups, users & OUs are shown in new 2008 server.

But when I m going to create a new GPO for a particular OUs, that asking new name for new GPO, after that I click on ok button, that display the error " The network name can not be found", and same error display when i click on Starter GPOs.

what is the problem?
Please reply me

Hi Kiranswagh,

When preparing the Active Directory environment did you run the following command adprep /domainprep /gpprep

This command should be run on the sever that holds the infrastructure master fsmo.

Hi Jamie,

this command is possible to run on new 2008 server PDC or 2003 Server ADC.?
Because already I transfered rolls to 2008 server before 4 days.
is this possible now run this command? if yes then pls suggest me on which server i can run this command?

Also I run the command "net share" on my old 2003 server, it displays the sysyvol folder shared.
but same command run on 2008 server PDC, no displays the sysvol folder shared.

Hi Kiranswagh,

The command below will only be necessary when upgrading from a 2000 domain. I didn't realise this right off the bat. I am currently upgrading a 2000 domain; therefore i thought that it was required across the board. It will not make a difference if the command is run on the windows 2003 environment as the permissions, etc will have already been set.

What error messages are you getting in the event log?

How is your DNS configured? Is the 2008 DC also hold the DNS role? If so is the 2008 DC point to its self for name resolution?

Regards,

Jamie

Hi,
I spoke with a colleague about the issue and he once dealt with the same issue. There are a few things that one could try such as resetting the bur flags to start sharing the sysvol again; however I do not think this applies in your situation because the netlogon share is also missing.
Reset bur flags:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947022
Snippet from above article:
Note This article does not apply if both NETLOGON and SYSVOL shares are missing.
My colleague over came this issue by demoting the domain controller; unfortunately this didnít occur gracefully because of the fact that the promotion did not evidently complete successfully.
So basically if demoting the DC using DCPROMO /adv does not completely remove the DC metadata from Active Directory then you will need to just delete the DC from Active Directory and use NTDSUTIL to clean up the metadata
Then the server was rebuilt and promoted as a domain controller.
How to clean up the metadata from Active Directory:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

Regards,
Jamie
